There is a kanji in Japanese, 色 which means, roughly, "color". It is used for the word 顔色, to describe peoples expressions. 色 is supposed to be a picture of two lovers sitting together, exchanging obvious expressions. I am wondering when Japanese people first began using the kanji 色 in association with colors, rather than just using な- and い-adjectives. For example, when was the word 茶色 first used in Japan?
I thought that my 中学校漢字辞書 would tell me because it sometimes tells me word history, but in the case of the kanji 色, there was no temporal information included.

You can see the history of colors in the link, provided. The word 色 came to Japan with The Golden Scrolls, which came in 57 BCE. This was the first writing system Japan ever had, which was Han-period Chinese writing. Japanese people didn't use it in writing until probably 500 years later. こちら
